Vernacular Globalization of 21st Chinese Education Policy: Based on the Concept of Competency

Abstract

Facing unprecedented challenges driven by accelerating globalization and faster rate of technological development, competency became a concept for fit the future society. Although competency introduced to many country’s education policy context including China, research addressing the impact on different national education policy contexts is still limited. Through a discourse analysis of influential Official Chinese reports and policy documents, this study aims to reveal how are Chinese education policy contextualized and legitimated the introduced of competency, What is the character of subject position and student identity, Which discourses frame these characteristic of ideal student. Based on the results, Chinese student’s 6 key competencies draws on traditional discourses, national identity discourses and neo-liberal discourses.
