Medical schools are increasingly moving away from assessment of individual competencies and toward holistic assessment of entrustable professional activities (EPAs). While entrustment decision-making has been investigated from the supervisors’ point of view, trainees’ perspectives – in particular medical students – has been little explored. In conducting focus groups to evaluate an innovative pilot project in medical education that utilized EPA assessment, we captured the students’ perspective on entrustment decision-making. Preliminary findings from our secondary analysis of qualitative data support previously reported factors that affect entrustment decisions and expand what is known about these factors by adding components particular to medical students. By describing the student's perspective, we add to the conversation about entrustment decision-making and shed light on new areas of research.
