Creating Spaces for Black/Brown Girls in Science: Hip-Hop and Urban Science Education

Sat, April 18, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This paper explores how a hip-hop based science program created a space for four Black/Brown girls in an urban high school to learn science and challenge stereotypes about girls in science and hip-hop. In this paper, we argue that culturally relevant hip-hop rooted science creates a space where Black/Brown girls can demonstrate their scientific literacy and knowledge while resisting race/gender biases
