Exploring Discourse Analysis of Teacher's Feedback in English Class Based on Initiate-Response-Feedback Mode

Tue, April 21, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

Initiate-Response-Feedback (IRF) is a basic discourse mode in English class, but its rigid and static mode has brought some disadvantages. The IRF mode limits the transmission of teaching content and hinders communication between the teacher and students. Over time, it will cause the students’ low participation in the class and affects students’ in-depth study. However, teachers can use positive feedback to effectively solve the problems of IRF. This proposal aims to analyze the discourse in English classes of junior high school based on IRF. It is found that the more positive feedback the teacher adopted, the more teacher-student interaction will be, and the more Prompt and Restate can be used to better encourage students to express themselves.
