Fight the #FakeNews: Principals' Reactions and Responses to the Spread of Misinformation

Mon, April 20, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

The popularity and influx of calling news and information a person does not agree with “fake news” has impacted how school administrators have governed their schools. Previous studies have shown an increase in stress, incivility, and usage of false information among students across the nation over the past couple of years (Costello, 2016; Rogers et al., 2017; Will, 2017). This study continues their work by surveying and interviewing high school principals around the United States to understand the pervasive spread of misinformation in high schools and analyze best practices principals used have addressed this challenge.
