Assessing Autism in Higher Education and Possibilities for Future Inquiry: A Systematic Literature Review

Abstract

This systematic review of the literature covers depictions of autism in postsecondary education across 84 studies. I framed the literature based on various phases of students’ college journeys (entrance, main experience, exit) and unveil the primary subtopics that studies address, including disclosure, academics, and mental health issues. Equally as important, this systematic review sheds light on the methodological and substantive gaps of existent literature. Furthermore, this review has informed the development of a conceptual framework guiding my dissertation, which employs an asset-based, neurodiversity lens in autistic community college students’ experiences. This model may also serve fellow scholars in enhancing their own depictions and understandings of autism.
