The Science of Adolescent Learning: Bridging Research, Policy, and Practice

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 10:15am, Virtual Room

Abstract

While Alliance for Excellent Education’s (All4Ed) science of adolescent learning (SAL) program is grounded in the extensive work of scholars, this presentation seeks to take their research beyond information and into action. Scientific and educational research is essential but as a policy, practice, and advocacy organization, All4Ed sees an urgent need to apply research in ways that can make a significant difference in the lives of the many youth who are not being adequately supported in schools and therefore have less opportunity to go on to succeed in postsecondary learning and career.
All4Ed’s work informs research-based decision-making at the state education agency, local school district, and school levels. Education leaders can more effectively prioritize and implement developmentally-appropriate improvement policies and practices when they are equipped with the knowledge and strategies that are aligned with the scientific evidence about how adolescents learn and develop. The science of learning also serves as a lever for advocacy around creating a more student-centered learning environment, that takes into consideration important information about adolescent body and brain development, identity, relationships, and agency.
This session will provide attendees with a view into the process that the Alliance for Excellent Education undertook, with experts and partner organizations, to review research from multidisciplinary fields to arrive at consensus statements – the 20 principles of adolescent learning, further expounded in a four-part report series. This work is the foundation of the SAL program vision of bridging research with policy and practice by translating, disseminating, communicating, and supporting implementation of SAL research in schools.
