Secondary Mathematics Teacher Preparedness and Selection Criteria, Program Training, and Fieldwork

Mon, April 20, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Motivated by debates about who to select to teach, how to prepare teachers, and what should they demonstrate prior to entry, this paper reviews feelings of preparedness. The authors analyzed data on teacher selection, coursework and training, and fieldwork. It looks at effects they had on teachers' feelings of preparedness for teaching for conceptual understanding, and culturally relevant classroom management. The data were analyzed using linear regression techniques, and the findings suggested that self-reported feelings of preparedness on teaching for conceptual understanding were significantly influenced by math content knowledge and having observed conceptual focused teaching in the fieldwork. Culturally responsive management was influenced by classroom management focus by the preparation program, as well as Black and Latinx teachers feeling well prepared.
