This presentation discusses initial results of a pilot study investigating the experiences and backgrounds of instructional assistants (IAs) working in critical needs areas or schools. The IAs surveyed were all interested in an alternative certification program offered through a local higher education institution and their districts. Initial survey data indicate that high needs districts already employ dedicated, quality individuals who are interested in becoming classroom teachers but are unable to pursue traditional teacher certification. The results suggest that district personnel, higher education institutions, and policymakers should consider ways to make certification more feasible for adults already serving students in needy districts.
