Critical Race Theology: A Note for Higher Education

Mon, April 20, 2:15 to 3:45pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Through this paper, the authors explore and set the foundation for a new theoretical framework to examine the experiences of black students and their faith experience (spirituality). Through the merging of concepts from two theoretical frameworks (Critical Race Theory and Black Liberation Theology), the development of Critical Race Theology provides a framework for scholars to understand the lived experiences of Black students whose spirituality is salient no matter their university affiliation, academic discipline, or class ranking. It is through this critical lens scholars can connect with Black students and come to understand how Black students connect to God and uses is as fuel for academic achievement.
