While National Assessment of Educational Progress (NAEP) began the digital transformation in 2009 with the inclusion of science interactive computer tasks, delivered on laptops, in 2015 NAEP transitioned paper-and-pencil mathematics, reading, science, and survey questionnaires to digitally based assessments (DBAs), and delivered on tablets. Transitioning to DBA created an opportunity to leverage new technologies and interactions that can measure what students know and can do, in many cases more precisely than paper assessments. It is paramount that this transition to DBA produce fair and equitable assessments that provide stakeholders across the nation with meaningful data that can be used to help make decisions.
The first presentation will be a demonstration of sample NAEP DBA innovative item types and components, including in-system universal design tools, such as scratchwork, text-to-speech, color contrast, and zoom, which are available to all students regardless of the assessment subject. The demonstration will include the in-system equation editor and calculator, used specifically for the mathematics assessment.
