NAEP scenario based tasks are narrative driven immersive assessment experiences that ask students to complete a media rich performance task. Tasks are delivered via Microsoft Surface Pro, may have associated hands on science kits, and are completed in 15 or 30 minute blocks. This presentation explores the affordances that scenario based tasks offer:
• universal design features that empower diverse learners to demonstrate what they know and can do,
• authentic investigations that target hard to measure constructs,
• hands on manipulatives in the hybrid hands on tasks that combine physical science kits with interactive digital tools,
• responsive assessment environment that dynamically adapts to student input and allows for students to generate their own data via simulations,
• high student engagement in authentic, relevant scenarios,
• and advanced process data analysis that provides insight into student cognitive strategies and problem solving.
