Creating “girls-only” spaces and female role-models are strategies used for broadening participation in computer science (CS). However, there isn’t a lot of research on the efficacy of these programs for increasing girls’ interest and self-efficacy in CS. We designed a CS camp and explored the efficacy of girls-only spaces and the role of mentors on increasing girls’ interest and self-efficacy. We surveyed 151 girls pre-and-post intervention. Findings suggest that regardless of gender configuration, girls’ self-efficacy and interest increased. The gender composition of campers didn’t have a differential effect on these gains. However, girls who attended camps with mixed-gender mentors had higher gains in self-efficacy and interest. Possible reasons for findings on mentor gender are discussed.
