Mobilizing as "Outsiders Within": The Power and Liminality of Queer, Femme, and Brown Graduate Students

Sat, April 18, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

The paper offers an analytical framing of queer, femme and brown graduate students as “outsiders within” (Hill Collins, 1986; 1999; Rogers & Hoover, 2010) the university (Adkins, 2017; Ferrales & Fine, 2005). With this framing, we aim to contextualize the possibilities of mobilization against symbolic violence (Bourdieu & Wacquant, 2013) by using subaltern forms of communication, knowledge, and action circumscribed within a White, colonial institution (Besnier, 2009; Gutierrez, 2017; Moreira & Diversi, 2011; Paz, 2008; Saldaña, Castro-Villareal & Sosa, 2013).
