Session Type: Symposium
This session focuses on the writings of resistance by the deceased Jennifer Maria Lavia (1956- 2019). Particularly, as she invoked the social imagination and the ways in which the historical antecedents of the plantation served to prefigure the pedagogical practices of teachers and the policy initiatives of educational systems (Lavia 2012). The themes and conclusions drawn have been juxtaposed against the authors’ reflections and experiences in HE (Caribbean and the USA) as well as, other relevant peer-reviewed publications. This session is significant in that it turns an enquiring gaze on our practice as researchers; exploring practical responses to how we go on to be in academia. The session gives meaning to a research imperative of hope, healing and advocacy.
