Session Type: Demonstration/Performance
Do you ever wish that school had a little more ... sparkle? This year's AERA Annual Meeting presents the rare and unique opportunity for educational researchers, teacher educators, and practitioners to connect with some of the most respected drag queens in the United States to learn more about a developing framework: drag pedagogy. In recent years, drag queens have made their way into schools and libraries, where they have offered youth programs grounded in queer literacy and culture. In this session, scholars will present a brief conceptual framework of drag pedagogy, followed by demonstrations by two local drag organizations serving San Francisco youth: Drag Queen Story Hour and Queens of the Castro.
Drag Pedagogy: Performance-Based Queer Literacy - Harper Benjamin Keenan, University of British Columbia; Harris Kornstein, New York University
Drag Queen Story Hour: Queer Literacy in Early Childhood - Harris Kornstein, New York University
Queens of the Castro: Serving LGBT Youth in San Francisco High Schools - Taica Hsu, Mission High School
