Sustainable Professional Development for Data-Informed Instructional Improvement

Abstract

Based on data, such as formative assessment data, teachers can improve the quality of their instruction, which can lead to increased student achievement. However, using data effectively for instructional change requires significant knowledge on the part of teachers (i.e., data literacy). Capacity building in the use of data focused on instructional improvement is urgently needed. This symposium focuses on capacity building and the shifts in practices, standards, and curricula this may require. It also focuses on realizing sustainable capacity building, as often educational innovations and professional development programs do not last. The main question underlying this symposium is: How can we provide sustainable pre- and in-service professional development to teachers focused on data-informed instructional improvement?
