Session Summary

Complicating Accounts of Oral and Written Discourses in the Teaching and Learning of Multilingual Youth

Sat, April 18, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

This symposium addresses the multiple and complex connections between oral and written language production, with an emphasis on the teaching and learning of multilingual students. Rather than treating spoken and written modes as dichotomous and distinct, the presenters position these as hybrid discourses (e.g., Bakhtin, 1981) that draw on multiple registers and modes. The presenters explore how connections between oral and written discourse provide learners in different contexts with opportunities to build meaning and develop understanding. The presenters trace learners’ language use and idea development within and across instructional activities to illustrate the multimodal, situated, and multifaceted nature of speaking and writing.
