Session Type: Symposium
We discuss four researcher-practitioner collaborations addressing inequity along the academic pipeline. The first talk utilizes surveys with a community organization to examine school discrimination among low-income youth of color. The second talk, in collaboration with school leaders, uses surveys and focus groups to document the challenges and recommendations of low-income, Latinx high school seniors as they transition to college. Using institutional data analysis and focus groups, the third talk examines the effects of and solutions for stigmatizing program messaging on marginalized students after the college transition. Finally, the fourth talk highlights recommendations, using surveys, for uncovering the hidden rules of universities that privilege dominant groups. Through diverse methodology, sampling, and working teams, we identify mechanisms of change to reduce inequality.
