Session Summary

Supporting and Studying Implementation of the Next Generation Science Standards on a Large Scale

Mon, April 20, 4:05 to 6:05pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Symposium

Abstract

The Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS) provide an inspiring new vision for science education, yet implementation can be daunting. Teachers need to teach in ways most have never experienced themselves, using approaches new to the profession, without robust curricular supports, and supported by administrators similarly unfamiliar with NGSS principles. This interactive symposium offers an opportunity to (1) hear from practitioners, district leaders, and state leaders about their successes and challenges with NGSS implementation and scaling-up; (2) learn about a multi-state implementation effort and the logic model guiding it; (3) examine outcomes from a two-year RCT of the professional learning intervention central to the effort; and (4) explore shifts in teachers’ classroom practices from a separate study of the same intervention.
