Bringing together researchers from Chicana/o/x Studies and Language and Literacy Education in U.S. and Canadian institutions, this symposium aims to shed light on the ways language ideologies shape the educational experiences and practices of students and teachers representing a range of ethnographic settings, ages, and ethnolinguistic backgrounds. In addition to a shared theoretical focus on language ideologies, the papers employ qualitative methodologies, including ethnography and case study approaches, which allow researchers to partner with stakeholders in order to learn from them and their life experiences. Together, these studies highlight the notion that exposing and interrogating ideologies that marginalize certain speakers and language varieties is crucial to the project of addressing persistent education inequalities.
