Session Type: Symposium
The effects of implicit bias, structural racism, and deficit thinking permeate organizations in the U.S., including out-of-school time (OST) programs. Approaches to addressing these issues are developing in the OST field separate from scholarship on these same topics. This session brings the two together by featuring a panel of practice-oriented presentations and research-to-practice dialogue to connect scholarship to on-the-ground equity-driven programs and practices. The panelists are organizational leaders and practitioner-scholars who are leading initiatives that forefront equity. These include examining resistance to equity-driven practices in youth-serving organizations, providing professional development to OST staff that addresses how to help youth of color navigate oppressive learning contexts, and building a strategic alliance to design and implement equity-driven practices in OST organizations.
