Arts-Based Research as Pedagogy

Abstract

This session will address when, why, and how arts-based research methods might be translated into pedagogical practices which could take the place of traditional text-based learning. Five university researcher/educators share how their visual arts-based research methods translate into effective pedagogical practices in teacher education and non-arts classrooms. These practices include comics, sketchbook/journals, sketchnoting, and artist books. Audience members, in small groups, will experiment with some of the strategies and techniques introduced by the presenters, and reflect on how they might expand the use of visual arts-based research methods for teaching and learning in their own classrooms.
