Session Type: Symposium
For the first time in its history, Brazil is implementing federally mandated academic standards, the Base Nacional Comum Curricular (BNCC), Brazil’s Common Core. We are currently engaged in a five-year study of the BNCC implementation that includes hundreds of interviews with national, state, and municipal officials, union leaders, university and public school faculty and staff, third-sector representatives, as well as observations of classrooms and schools. The interactive panel session we propose will begin with a general introduction to the BNCC and a short description of our five-year study. Authors will then present four papers touching on topics central to implementation, followed by comments from two internationally recognized discussants. We will then open the floor for questions and discussion.
