A Novel Methodological Approach to Understanding Disabilities

Abstract
This symposium brings together four papers that each provide an introductory overview and application of a novel methodological approach. The collection includes a diverse set of educational researchers. This symposium aims to provide a non-technical introduction to the research approach that has the promise to provide a more nuanced look into special education data. The flexibility of the mixture modeling framework is well suited to address questions of heterogeneity in special education research and perhaps provide a perspective that may more closely tied to perspective shared among researchers in this area.
