Policy and Advocacy to Promote Educational Equity for Students Marginalized by Race, Language, and/or Citizenship Status

Abstract

This session features the important policy and advocacy work done by leading legal and educational scholars in the areas of bilingual education, educational equity, and undocumented student rights. Discussed are the role of partnerships between educational researchers and legal scholars in building and arguing some of the most important legal cases that promote equitable educational opportunities for students marginalized due to their race, language, and/or citizenship status as well as in ensuring the resulting legal decisions are enforced and/or revisited when intended outcomes are not reached.

Special guest Peter Roos will be recognized for his influential advocacy work during this special session. The renowned session speakers will offer a motivational and future looking talk on ways in which research can join the legal arguments made on behalf of our bilingual communities. Ultimately, the aim of this session is to motivate the future generation of advocates and scholars. Refreshments will be served.
