This symposium brings together a panel of scholars to discuss the culturally sustaining pedagogical possibilities of Hip Hop on the socio-emotional wellbeing of children and youth. Presenters extend Elligan’s (2000, 2004) rap therapy model, integrating tenets of Critical Race Praxis (Stovall, 2013; Yamamoto, 1997) and Healing-Centered Engagement (Ginwright, 2018) to explore the relationship between contemporary rap music and healing for Black children and youth. Further, discussions center intergenerational healing, “hood civics”, Reality Pedagogy, and trauma informed mindful practices within Critical Social Justice Hip Hop pedagogical frameworks.
