Session Summary

Reclaiming Space: An Indigenized Narrative of Alcatraz Island (Requires Advance Online Registration)

Fri, April 17, 11:00am to 3:30pm, Virtual Room

Session Type: Off-Site Visit

Abstract

In November 1969, American Indian college students amplified the Red Power movement through a 19-month occupation of Alcatraz Island. The occupation reflected efforts of Indigenous peoples to critique publicly the impact of broken treaties, federal assimilation policies, and governmental disregard on Native Nations and to call special attention to the educational needs of students. To commemorate the 50th anniversary of this movement, this off-site visit will provide AERA participants an opportunity to engage the historical space and remember the social movement that transpired at Alcatraz. AERA participants will meet with 1969 occupation organizers and participants as well as local community leaders for an opening discussion at 11:00 am. Next, all will travel together by bus to Pier 33, take a ferry ride to Alcatraz, and have a self-guided tour of Alcatraz. A closing group discussion at Alcatraz will conclude by 3:30 pm. Participants will be able to take one of two afternoon return ferry rides to Pier 33. From there, participants will be responsible for their own transportation. This tour has a maximum capacity of 50 attendees.
