Session Type: Invited Speaker Session
Initiated at the 1997 Annual Meeting in Chicago, the 2020 session of “The Continuation of Conversations with Senior Scholars on Advancing Research and Professional Development Related to Black Education” will be number 24 in this popular and widely heralded series. We were granted Presidential Session status in 1999 in Montreal—thus, the San Francisco session will mark 22 years as a Presidential Session. Importantly, we have some of the most notable education scholars in the country participate as topic discussion leaders. In 1997, we started with 12 tables and now we will have 19 tables for 2020. Over the years, we have averaged approximately 10-12 participants, not counting topic leaders, per table. In the 2018 and 2019 meetings in San Antonio and Toronto, respectively, many estimated the participant numbers approached 300. We should expect similar participation levels in San Francisco.
As clearly shown, we will need enough room and tables for the expected number of participants. The number of participants per topic table varies and can range from 7 or 8 to up to 30 or more. Further, we certainly need enough chairs where participants can form large circles needed for popular topics. Notably, the room and accommodations in Toronto were wonderful. We continue to find the 4 PM start-time is quite advantageous as it allows the session to be two-hours in length and participants have time to become intently engaged in discussions and participate at other tables, if desired. For years, the session has been held on the second day of the meeting. We hope the selection of the second day can continue as it allows participants to reinforce contacts over the following days of our meeting.
