2019 marks the 400 year anniversary of the arrival of enslaved Africans in Jamestown,Virginia. Drawing from diverse fields of study (e.g., History, Education History, Social Studies, Curriculum Studies, Black Studies and Literacy Studies) this panel will explore the complex histories of race and memory in the topic U.S. slavery. The panelists will address the following question: How should the topic of slavery in U.S. be studied in K-12 settings? Consideration will also be given to how the topic of slavery can enable students to tackle long-standing topics related to race and racism in the U.S.
