Narrative inquiry invites researchers, research participants, and the imagined reading audience to share and consider their storied lives through specific methodological features. In the telling of stories, some narrative inquirers position their studies in relation to other forms of inquiry. We explore the methodological features that make narrative inquiry unique and discuss how its borders are mapped with critical theory. Author 1 shares the way critical race theory played a role in the narrative inquiries of his dissertation. We conclude by offering design elements for narrative inquirers considering critical theory, as intersecting these forms of scholarship require particular kinds of attentiveness.
