Principals' Actions That Create Trust: Recommendations From Teachers in a High-Trust School

Tue, April 21, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

This article explores teachers’ perceptions of the actions of a principal they trust and provides suggestions for what principals can do to foster a culture of trust that positively impacts teachers and students. Teacher perceptions were captured through individual semi-structured interviews and a focus group. Findings were shared with participants and a member check was conducted during the thematic analysis process. Results affirmed Hoy and Tschannen-Moran’s (2003) Five Facets of Trust and aligned with theories of social capital and self-efficacy development. Several recommendations for educational leaders emerged, including hiring practices and steps that may support efforts to institutionalize a trust culture.
