Play-Building for Pedagogical Purposes: Performing Concepts of Person-Centered Care for Family Orientations and Staff Training

Mon, April 20, 8:15 to 9:45am, Virtual Room

Abstract

This presentation is based upon a collaboration among an urban hospital (organizational stakeholder), a faculty member of recreation and leisure studies and a member of a drama department. They employed focus groups to generate data on the lived-experiences of family members and hospital staff of patients with dementia or traumatic brain injuries and ethnodrama (Saldaña, 2005) and playbuilding (Author, 2008 & 2018) to disseminate it theatrically. Leavy (2009) claims that, “the use of arts-based presentational strategies brings academic scholarship to wider audiences” (p. 14). This partnership produced a 32-minute pedagogical video to evoke dialogic conversations about person-centered care. Performing the dramatizations live, this session demonstrates how research-based theatre can reach non-academic audiences, providing “possibilities for the public good” (Call).
