Reported Behavior Incidents by Student Academic Engagement and Student and School Demographics: Sources of Disproportionality

Abstract

This study examines how students’ demographics and academic engagement predict their likelihood of having any behavior incidents in 2018-2019. Black and Latinx students were at least 1.4 times as likely as White students to have behavior incidents. Male and free/reduced-price lunch (FRPL) students were more than 2.0 times as likely as female and ineligible students to have behavior incidents. Students reporting higher academic engagement were less likely to have behavior incidents than their peers reporting lower engagement. Of school-level factors, only percent FRPL was associated with behavior incidents, with higher percentages tied to a higher likelihood. The size of the gender gap, but no other gaps, differed significantly between schools. Implications for research and policy are discussed.
