This study uses the Rasch measurement model to evaluate the International Ocean Literacy Survey (IOLS version 4). The IOLS is the result of a multinational effort to measure how well individuals understand the essential principles and fundamental concepts about the functioning of the ocean. Study sample was collected in early 2019 from participants aged 15 to 17 years-old. This work examined the 1,481 valid responses to the English version. This study demonstrates that the IOLS scale is a psychometrically sound instrument with great measurement properties including internal consistency reliability, construct validity, goodness of fit, item level characteristics, and absence of gender differential item functioning.
