This dual-case study examines the experiences of two individuals with significant disabilities as they transitioned from high school to a community living setting for the first time as young adults. The research explores the challenges they faced as they transitioned from congregate-care facilities to their own apartment in the community. Key themes identified are issues of perceived safety and risk, staff orientation toward self-determination, family support for decision-making, financial vulnerability, and community support. These potential barriers to supported community living must be addressed for individuals with significant behavior needs as they transition from institutional settings to integrated community citizenship.
