The 21st century skills and STEM learning standards (e.g., NGSS and CCSS) include collaboration as a necessary aspect in K-12 science education. To support the development of collaboration skills among students, it is important to understand and assess the relationship between behavioral modes of communication that generate complex collaborative interactions. In this paper, we present a conceptual model to assess collaboration skills based on behavioral communication at both individual and group levels. Our model shows how the various layers of behavioral cues contribute to collaboration and serves as the foundation of an automated assessment tool for collaboration. The assessment tool uses behavior analytics comprised of multistage machine learning models built on an intricate coding scheme.
