Rehearsals: Peers or Avatars? Comparison of Elementary Teacher Candidates' Elicitation of Student Thinking

Tue, April 21, 10:35am to 12:05pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Current research has analyzed traditional rehearsals, however innovative technologies such as virtual simulation software offer new opportunities to use student avatars in this context. This NSF-supported work explores the use of rehearsals within virtual simulations, as compared to traditional rehearsals, to develop TCs eliciting skills. Our examination of teacher candidates at three timepoints found similarities in the changes in frequencies of certain types of teacher moves (Stein et al., 2015) except for their use of Uptake Literal and Repeat moves. The similarities and key differences in development provide insight and motivation for further investigation into the effectiveness of virtual simulations as approximations of practice.
