In telling the story of one of the African American boys in his study of mathematics achievement, Stinson (2008) quotes the student as seeing the opportunity to tell the other side of the "achievement gap story," to make success stories the norm" instead of the exception. Building on this theme, this study, analyzed a corpus of longitudinal interviews collected under the Building Blocks early childhood mathematics project to construct profiles of the mathematical thinking, dispositions, and emerging mathematical identities of high achieving African American boys as they developed during the pre-K through first-grade years.
