Gender Equity on the Podium: An Examination of All-State Conductors

Abstract

The purpose of this study was to examine the gender makeup of a sample of invited All-State conductors from eleven states in the Southern Division of the American Choral Directors Association between the years 2012 to 2017. The research questions guiding the project were:

1. What are the gender demographics of a sample of All-State conductors? Is there gender equity within this sample?
2. What are the gender demographics of conductors by choir type (e.g., SATB, TTBB, SSAA)?

The results of this project provide empirical evidence that women are significantly underrepresented as All-State choral conductors.
