"I'm Gay, So I'm Afraid": Examining Experiences of Gay Latino Collegians in the Trump Era

Mon, April 20, 12:25 to 1:55pm, Virtual Room

Abstract

Trump and his administration have consistently attacked both the queer and Latina/o community in recent years. The purpose of this study is to explore the effects and overall influence that Trump’s Presidency has had on the experiences of gay Latino male collegians through Latina/o Critical Theory and racist nativism approaches. While participants in this study talked about their sexual and racial/ethnic identities being under attack prior to the election of Trump, the issue was exacerbated with him as president. Overall, participants expressed feeling less safe on and off campus, felt as if they were personally being attacked, and experienced higher levels of anxiety than usual.
