We investigated the experience of prospective first-generation students in a university-high school partnership mentoring program, bridging the gap between researchers and stakeholders. We sought to identify aspects prospective first-generation students were seeking in a mentoring program dedicated to post-secondary education. Based on interviews and short-answer surveys of 12 students from a cohort of 17, we found students valued their connection with their mentor over all other program offerings and aspects. . Based on these findings, we offer an overview of the construct of connected mentoring. We suggest university-school partnership mentoring programs for prospective first-generation students apply connected mentoring in their approach to program planning.
