This presentation will focus on the NAEP reading assessment and the associated innovations afforded by the digital platform that better support measurement of the intended construct. The NAEP Reading Framework specifies the use of authentic sources. The transition to DBA allows for NAEP passages to be presented in the same array of colors that were used in the original source documents. In addition, navigation buttons allow students to go back into the text or to access footnotes, charts, maps and other ancillaries. Examples of DBA items and tools will be shown during this part of the symposium. Digital delivery also allows the program to track student’s interactions with such tools; some of these interactions were featured in the 2017 Reading Report Card. Finally, we will briefly share information about reading scenario-based tasks, which help measure purpose-driven reading, as discussed in the NAEP reading framework.
