A core professional function for school librarians and English Language Arts teachers is curating relevant, engaging, and thought-provoking materials for students. However, a systematic review of curation projects revealed that the assignments often fall short in asking our learners to critically consider why and how they curate resources. Drawing on data from a study of several youth materials courses for preservice teachers and school librarians, we advocate for a critical and collaborative approach to curation, emphasizing several key principles: the inclusion of multiple mediums, diverse perspectives, and complex conceptual approaches to inquiry. We identify revisions to curation assignments currently assigned in teacher education courses and lay the groundwork for more meaningful partnerships between ELA teachers, school librarians and teacher educators.
