Teaching Affect Labeling Through Literature

Mon, April 20, 4:05 to 5:35pm, Virtual Room

Putting feelings to words is a foundational skill of social emotional regulation. This pilot study focuses on how to teach pre-service special education teachers to teach affect labeling in the context of interactive reading. Pre-service teachers engaged in three simulations (role plays) with a focus on emotional identification of story characters. This provides pre-service teachers with opportunities to rehearse and reflect on the practice of teaching affect labeling. Affect labeling is taught through encouraging the understanding the feelings of story characters, and having students relate those feelings to their previous experiences. The results were promising, indicating that this method of role play, coaching, and reflection was effective.
