This qualitative case study explores five pre-service social studies teachers (PSST) in a University-based teacher certification program designed to prepare equity and justice-oriented educators. Findings suggest that despite the purposeful deployment particular contents advancing politically subversive counter-narratives, ideas of citizenship, and questions of social justice, the radical thrust of these contents are being subverted by the transcendental logics that exist at the formal level of PSST discourse. This dynamic actively contributes to the deferral of a more genuine form of political praxis and suggests that the institutional persistence of these logics serve to legislate, condition, and constrain the political imaginaries of those that have chosen to engage in this critical work.
