The Engaged Voice: Youth Stakeholders in Leadership Practice

Abstract

This qualitative case study illuminates how school leaders engage the voices of youth of color, in particular, elementary-aged youth of color in the K-2 school space. While recent studies have emerged on the importance of centering student voice in educational leadership literature, few studies seek to shift the unit of analysis from leader to youth in order to provide new perspectives to the field of educational leadership. Findings from this study provide key contributions to leadership development and practice. Additionally, these findings suggest that while school leaders may value engaging student voice, their conceptions of doing so vary from the ways in which students desire to have their voices engaged in schools.
