Two experiments were conducted to explore whether adding eye movement modeling examples (EMME) to a narrated animation on neural transmission could guide visual processing during multimedia learning and improve learning outcomes, and whether the effects of EMME depended on the pace of lesson. The results revealed that adding visual signaling (or cueing) in the form of EMME (a) caused learners to fixate more on the relevant portion of the screen, have longer fixations in the relevant portion of the screen, and spend a greater percentage of time fixating on the relevant portion of the screen, and (b) resulted in better scores on retention and transfer posttests. These effects were consistently observed when the lesson was system-paced but learner-paced.
