Learning from self-made errors is vital for career development. However, for many professionals, learning from an error is easier said than done. The present study explores in detail how and when supervisors enable or impede professionals’ learning from error in the wider organizational context. Results from semi-structured interviews suggest that supervisors play a role in creating a positive error climate, which is a helpful but not sufficient condition for learning from errors. Supervisors also have a direct role in creating the opportunity for professionals to learn from their errors through immediate feedback and possibilities to jointly experience and exchange experiences. This study adds to literature through its focus on other organizational conditions impairing professionals to learn from their errors.
