Engaging in Art and Reflexivity in Learning Qualitative Research

Abstract

This study explores the opportunities for developing reflexivity through art in a qualitative research class. Drawing on an ethnographic dataset of doctoral student learning of research, we explore ways through which one scholar engaged in art as a way to develop reflexivity and understanding of qualitative research. Analyses of her research journal, five pieces of art, and her reflections at the time of the class and three years later, make visible how art enabled the scholar to deepen her reflexivity, understanding of research, and connections with her history, family, and the social world. We demonstrate how the use of art can serve as pedagogical, methodological, and reflexive practices for deepening student engagement in learning and doing qualitative research.
